4:14 is Korean Single's Day!

You've Probably Heard of White Day, But What About Black Day?

In contrast to White Day (Valentine's Day in Asia) that is celebrated a month prior on March 14, Black Day (Korean Single's Day) is celebrated on April 14.

A quick summary about White Day ~

It is celebrated annually on March 14, one month after Valentine's Day, when people give reciprocal gifts to those who gave them gifts received on Valentine's Day.

It began in Japan in 1978; since then, its observance has spread to several other Asian nations.

But unlike the very popular White Day and even more popular Valentine’s Day, Black Day is not as popular so it’s more of an unofficial holiday in South Korea.

Similar to America's Single’s Day, it is a day where those who are single, spend time with friends, family or other single persons and eat black colored foods like Jjajangmyeon.

What Do People Do On Black Day?

Generally people who are single would wear dark or black clothes and eat foods that are black in color.

The most popular food eaten on this day is Jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), usually topped with chopped pork and vegetables or other meats in a sauce made from Chunjang (black bean paste).

Specifically speaking, Jjajangmyeon is a dish that Koreans love to indulge in because it is a very popular comfort food that can be enjoyed anytime one is in low spirits!

Many Korean restaurants sell this dish and it is even readily available in stores as instant meals or instant noodles like Nongshim Chapagetti and PALDO Bul Jjajang.

Or you can also make it yourself by using Chunjang like Ottogi Black Bean Sauce, Obok Chunjang Black Bean Paste and Jinmi Black Bean Paste along with your favorite stir fry noodle choice.

It's Not All Sad!

Despite the sad sounding meaning of the holiday, Black Day isn’t generally celebrated in a negative fashion.

On the contrary, for those who are single and celebrate together. It is more of a friendly meet up of single people where they can bond over a delicious meal.

There are even eating competitions at restaurants and events for singles to participate in, including another chance at dating!
